The talented composer Giacomo Puccini

talented compoeser Giacomo Puccini Lucca

The talented composer Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Second Maria Puccini (Lucca, December 22, 1858 – Brussels, 29 November 1924) was an Italian composer, considered one of the greatest opera composers in  history.

Giacomo Puccini was the sixth of nine children, and last descendant of a family that for a century and a half had dominated the musical life of Lucca.
After being orphaned of father, he spent his youth between the family home in Lucca and the summer home of Celle. At the age of nine he entered the seminary where he will begin to play the organ in the Cathedral of Lucca, also if he always preferred to work. Puccini obtained his diploma at the Musical Institute Pacini in Lucca, in the late 1880s and he decided to continue his studies at the Milan Conservatory.
This was an important period for Puccini, as it came into contact with the musical world of the moment and with the movement of “Scapigliatura”, a group of intellectuals willing to oppose the solemn and refined forms of art to give free space for inspiration and imagination.
Here, he meets Piero Mascagni (the artist from Leghorn) with which share a room for several months. After completing his studies in 1883, he graduated with Symphonic Capriccio, through which transpires immediately the genius that is in him.In that same year, on April 1, it is announced a competition for small artists from the magazine The Illustrated Theatre (Sonzogno publisher) that provides an unpublished work in one act. Puccini composed “Le Villi” but did not win and was not even mentioned among the works that deserve consideration.

Success Comes

In 1884, thanks to a signed subscription of friends and respected investors, the opera was staged at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan, where he obtained public  success and exciting criticism. They called it “the composer Italy had been waiting” (BBC).
The public consensus enabled Puccini to sign his first contract with a major publisher Giulio Ricordi, who commissioned a new work intended to “Teatro alla Scala” theater. His second opera, Edgar (1889), which cost the composer about four years of work, did not achieve the expected success and for decades to come underwent several adaptations without, however, ever entering the repertoire.
Ricordi trusted Puccini talent and continued to support him for many years until he was able to establish himself, and it was with his third opera Manon Lescaut (Teatro Regio Torino 1893) which gained success and fame.
The thirty-five Puccini moved to Torre del Lago with Elvira Bonturi – his wife – and his son Antonio. This will be the place that will give life to the majority of his operas: La Bohème (Turin, Teatro Regio, February 1896), Tosca (Rome, Teatro Costanzi, January 1900), and Madama Butterfly (Brescia, Teatro Grande, May 1904) .
Now famous worldwide, Puccini, celebrates journeys that led him to attend performances of his works in Europe and America: “The West Maiden” (New York, Metropolitan Opera, December 1910), “La Rondine” (Monte Carlo, March 1917) , “Il Trittico” (New York, Metropolitan Opera, December 1918), to the last great work on whose name the teacher poses long in doubt before choosing Turandot, the Venetian playwright Carlo Gozzi.
Even if seriously ill, Puccini worked to Turandot until the end of his days, leaving it unfortunately unfinished.
He underwent surgery for throat cancer in Brussels on November 24, and died a few days after 29 November 1924.

Thanks to its melodies, after a century he has made great Lucca and its citizens continue to honor him trough “Villa Museum Puccini”.

The Renaissance city walls of Lucca

Lucca renaissance walls villas accommotation.

The Renaissance city walls of Lucca

The Walls of Lucca depicting the symbol of the city that stands out in the world both for its historical value and for the artistic and monumental beauty.

The construction of Lucca‘s walls dates back to the Renaissance period from the early sixteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century and to this day has been preserved intact.

Architecturally, the walls are composed of twelve curtains in the embankment, which join together eleven bulwarks with brick ornament, twelve meters high and thirty wide basis. It extends for more than four kilometers, creating a large and lovely urban park, within which we can observe the presence of mature trees including oaks, chestnut trees, plane trees, hackberry.

Growing on the circle of walls are centuries-old trees which, since the beginning, were planted to consolidate the enormous mass of earth. In the 19th century Duchess Maria Luisa of Bourbon commissioned the royal architect Lorenzo Nottolini to arrange the walls definitively as a public walkway. Still today, they are one of the favourite walking places in Lucca.

With the loss of the defensive purpose of the city, the walls were converted for civilian use in the early decades of the nineteenth century, transforming the curtains of the fortification in the current city promenade. In total respect of the cultural value of the monument, the Walls of Lucca still slow to their appeal for both citizens and tourists, thus stating suitability and merit, involving the whole city to the participation of numerous events, exhibitions and events that choose this place to present their initiatives and activities.

The Walls of Lucca, in addition to being the greatest example of modern fortification in Europe, are also an urban resource of great importance for the whole city within which its citizens choose to live these open spaces to spend  free time having sports activities, walks and meetings.

This mix of peace and energy inevitably involves the large number of tourists who, every day, choose this place as ideal for a stroll through the trees. This will give you the chance to rediscover the way a green space can be cleverly inserted in an urban context and to fully enjoy the picturesque view from the top of the famous towers and church steeples that rise from the rooftops.

The area of Comics & Games

The Comics area is made even more striking because of the provision within the city walls: Piazza Napoleone, Piazza del Giglio, Piazza San Giovanni, Piazza San Martino and Corso Garibaldi. Finally in Piazza del Collegio, at the former Royal College, it is set up the Japan Palace, one of the focal points of the entire event. Here, in addition to being present many exhibitors, we are organized various events and “showcase” related to the world of comics. The Self Area is dedicated to self-productions and amateur projects, which are housed at the Passaglia Pavilion Piazza Napoleone.

Activities

In addition, during the days of the exhibition market, local events and activities involve visitors, which in turn feel absolutely protagonists of the event. The public can in fact participate in live role-playing games, concerts, screenings, meetings with authors, presentations and performances devoted to this fabulous world. Participation in all activities is included in the price of admission to Lucca Comics & Games.
The area on the bulwark of San Paolino is another point to mark on the map. Here, they will also have other kinds of performances, not for musical force. In particular, here there is the Cosplay Competition, open to any individual or group that wants to participate. It is an event that is very appreciated both for those who participate in the competition but also for those who make a spectator, so much so that it was decided to develop it in two days view of the influx of participants.
After the relocation of the event within the historic center of the latest editions, given the marked rise of the public, it was decided to also increase the number of guests of publishing houses and individual exhibitors, thus creating a virtuous circle that allowed to further widen the cultural offer of seminars, meetings and exhibitions for visitors, all surrounded by the picturesque setting of the Renaissance city.

The Holy Face and Santa Croce’s Luminara

The Holy Face and Santa Croce's Luminara

The Holy Face and Santa Croce’s Luminara

The Holy Face (or Holy Cross) is a crucifix made of walnut that is located inside the Cathedral of St. Martin in an isolated chapel in the left aisle performed by Matthew Civitali in 1482.
The procession of the Holy Face (Santa Croce’s Luminara) takes place on September 13 of each year and retraces the same route, starting from the Basilica of San Frediano around at 20.00 and arrival at the Cathedral of St. Martin.
The “Illuminations” specifically cross Fillungo street, Via Roma, Piazza San Michele, Via Vittorio Veneto, Piazza Napoleone, Piazza del Giglio, Via del Duomo, Piazza San Giovanni and Piazza San Martino.
The procession of “The Holy Face and Santa Croce’s Luminara”, nowdays, is the latest testimony of an ancient common practice in all major cities of the Middle Ages in which the subject populations undertook – at the time of submission – to bring a wax tribute, in times when the wax ‘bee was a luxury item; also the amount of wax was established in general in dedication agreements, depending on the seller’s possibilities. This offer was made in solemn form, once a year, at the feast of the patron saint of the hegemonic city. However this wax was not immediately turned on, but preserved to provide illumination of the statue for the following year.
The city will be illuminated by the presence of thousands of candles hung along the streets and the sides of buildings. A suggestion that now is part of the tradition of Lucca.
The “Illuminations” is made from the religious, from the “institutional” civil and finally, by reminiscent groups in historical costume. Upon arrival in St. Martin’s Cathedral there will be a tribute to the Holy Face, the Archbishop’s speech, songs by the choirs and the closing liturgy. It will then run the Mottettone, a polyphonic choral and instrumental type that involves the use of a large orchestra and a double choir that is dialed from year to year by Lucca musicians on the occasion of the feast for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross .
The manifestations of the Holy Cross concludes with the blessing of Archbishop.
